Empowering Women Food Vendors with Clean Cooking Energy

Tanzania Communities Rise Foundation proudly announces the successful launch of the Clean Cooking Energy Program, introduced on 14th September 2024 in partnership with Oryx Tanzania. This transformative initiative is designed to improve the working conditions, health, and economic stability of women street food vendors while promoting clean energy and environmental sustainability in Tanzania.

The first phase of the program has distributed 300 clean cooking gas kits to women food vendors across multiple regions. Before this initiative, many vendors relied heavily on firewood, charcoal, and other traditional fuels, which are inefficient and harmful. During the rainy season, firewood becomes wet and charcoal burns slowly, making meal preparation longer and limiting the ability to serve customers efficiently. Smoke from these fuels also exposes vendors to health risks such as respiratory infections, eye irritation, and other illnesses.

The introduction of clean cooking gas has transformed operations, providing faster cooking, safer handling, reduced smoke exposure, and greater reliability regardless of weather conditions. This program addresses a critical national need, as only 6% of Tanzanians currently use clean cooking energy. By reducing reliance on firewood and charcoal, the initiative protects the environment, improves health outcomes, and strengthens the economic resilience of women food vendors.

Building on the success of the first phase, Tanzania Communities Rise Foundation aims to scale up the program and supply 10,000 clean cooking gas kits nationwide, expanding its impact on sustainable livelihoods, climate protection, and women's empowerment.

Special appreciation goes to Oryx Energies, NMB Bank, Azania Bank, UTT AMIS, and Asas Group of Companies for their generous support. The program also expresses gratitude to Minister of Union and Environment, Dr. Ashatu Kijaji, for serving as the Guest of Honour, represented by Christina Mndeme, Deputy Secretary General.

Through these collective efforts, the Clean Cooking Energy Program continues to empower women, improve health, reduce environmental impact, and promote sustainable and resilient livelihoods across Tanzania.
